How to Avoid 4 Major SEO Pitfalls

Posted by wptheme on July 30th, 2010

When done correctly, search engine optimization can dramatically improve the rankings for your blog or website. But if you are not careful, you could end up making costly mistakes. Here are some examples of what NOT to do when developing an SEO strategy:

- Giving your page(s) a poor title. The title of your page is the first thing the search engines see when they crawl your website. If your title is unclear or misleading, the search engines will have no idea what your site is about and it will not be indexed correctly. Even if it is indexed properly and gets a high ranking on the SERPs, if the title of the link does not grab a person’s attention they will not click on it. A good title is a clear and concise one that includes one or all or your keywords. You should also have a different title for each page on your site. Do not try to trick people into clicking on your link by using an attention grabbing practice that has nothing to do with the actual content on your site. This is a black hat SEO practice that can result in your site being removed from the search engines.

- Not picking the right keywords. Poor keyword research and selection are the easiest ways to kill your site. When doing keyword research, it is important to remember the big picture. People get so caught up in wanting the “high-demand” keywords that they forget the reason they are doing keyword research in the first place. The point of keyword research is not to rank for the most popular keywords. The point of keyword research is to find the keywords that will actually result in conversions. What good is that “high-demand” keyword that you have spent hours and hours working on if it does not convert for you? Pay attention to your pay-per-click campaigns. They will give you an idea of what keywords actually convert for you.

- Targeting the wrong market. If you are running a niche website, not knowing your audience can be a very costly mistake. In order to have an effective SEO campaign, you need to know who your customers will be. Once you educate yourself about your audience, you will be able to deliver goods and services that are the most value to them.

Winter in the Mountains of Catalonia

Posted by wptheme on July 30th, 2010

Bergueda, one of the comarcas (country) in Catalonia is situated to the north of Barcelona, Spain. Its capital Berga separates the more populated southern half called Baix Bergueda from northern comarca, Alt Bergueda.  Alt Bergueda includes the pre-pyranean mountain range known for its scenic beauty. These mountain ranges starts at Berga. Els Roures, the popular catalonian restaurant is located close to the mountains.

Though it is a tough trek to these mountains, it offers enchanting views and tranquility. Rasos de Peguera, an erstwhile ski resort provides different outdoor activities including snowshoeing and trekking. This place is a favorite destination among families on holidays as they come together for sledding. The main lodge has a cozy atmosphere and you can see families sitting together around the fire-place. On one of these treks sponsored by the Tourism Department of Catalonia, I enjoyed beautiful views and a glimpse of Andorra.

Els Roures restaurant offers a warm and cozy atmosphere. The huge fire place lends an old world charm to this restaurant. Here you get traditional Berguerda dishes including local mushrooms. I had grilled sausages, sangria made with locally available berries, wild mushroom cannelloni, and the mushroom liqueur. I had a unique experience eating here and the lunch was extremely delicious. One Way Links for Increasing Traffic, What to Know?

Posted by wptheme on July 19th, 2010

The number of people doing business online continues to expand day by day at a stunning rate. As more and more people try their hand at starting and growing Internet-based enterprises, an increased number of websites are appearing. In essence what this means is that there is now greater competition for a slice of the action than at any other time in the history of the World Wide Web. In addition, all indications are that this trend is likely to continue, and that competition will become even more fierce.

But don’t worry. There is hope and help - in fact, there is a lot of hope and help - for your success online.

SEO to the Rescue

You see, the difference between an online enterprise that succeeds as opposed to one that fails, (given that they both have a saleable product or service in demand), is the amount of targeted traffic that the sites attract. It’s a very simple equation. The more targeted traffic that visits a website, the more opportunity that site has of generating sales. In short, it’s simply a “numbers game.”

So the name of the game is attracting the right traffic and lots of it. And the mechanism for doing this is something called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is the science by bettering your website’s page rankings among the various search engines in order to attract more search engines and people who use them to your websites.

Helpful SEO Tools

SEO has various tools within its arsenal to help it in improving your site’s page ranking, but by far the most influential tool is something called link building, and in particular, one way link building. Google, the biggest search engine by far, has a set of algorithms that it uses to rate or rank a website. Whilst not every part of this algorithm is known (combined with the fact that the algorithm’s make-up is constantly reviewed by Google), it is known that Google set great store by how many one way links a website has.

The logic is that the more one way links, the more people value that site and therefore link to it. Google surmises that this is because the site has unique, interesting content, and this is exactly what they like to try and promote. Two way, or reciprocal links, don’t have the same magic, because in Google’s eyes, because two way links can be arranged for mutual benefit, whereas as a one way link indicates specific interest in your website.

Asking Your Website Designer These Asks

Posted by wptheme on July 19th, 2010

Like any professional service, website design is one that’s not always easy to judge before you actually sample it. Sure, you can look at someone’s portfolio but you have no way of knowing how much of the design was down to the designer and how much was insisted on by the client. So what should you ask your website designer to stand a better chance of getting a well designed website?

1. Do you do the design work by yourself or with a team?

There’s advantages and disadvantages whichever way this one is answered. But it may give you a clue as to how big the firm you’re working with really is. Sometimes a one-man band can bring better results than a collaborative effort and often this is more down to your personal preference as a client.

2. Will the pages you design validate and work in all browsers?

This is a biggie. There are standards for HTML and CSS that should be adhered to. As Microsoft have gradually made their Internet Explorer browser more compliant with these standards, a lot of sites have been caught out because they were designing their pages to take account of the idiosyncracies of Internet Explorer rather than work on all modern browsers. A good designer can make your pages look near enough identical regardless of the browser or operating system your customers are using. A bad designer will produce a page that goes haywire if it’s not viewed on the precise combination that they designed it in.

3. Will I be able to change the pages myself if I need to?

This may well strike dread into your designer’s heart but it shouldn’t! After all, you may want to add an extra service or remove an item you no longer offer. This is probably a two minute job that’s as quick for you to do as it is for you to explain to your web designer. It’s no good if it takes weeks of to-ing and fro-ing to get small changes made to your site. Any blustering could mean that either your potential designer is a control freak or that their code is so messy it would take you a month of Sundays to work your way round it. Some designers can’t even modify their own pages - scary thought, but one I’ve met before.

Successful Website, Useful Tips

Posted by wptheme on July 19th, 2010

The current economic climate and recession has forced everyone to think a little differently about how they are spending and saving money. This is esepecially true of small business owners who have been forced to market and promote their products and servies in different ways. Because of the low barriers to entry, entrepreneurs are often keen to make use of the internet as it is potentially a powerful promotional tool. For those wishing to utilise the internet it is umportant to understand the ways in which products and services can be promoted online.

There are several benefits of giving your business an online presence. For one, it enables you to find and reach out to markets that may otherwise have been extremely costly to target through more traditional advertising methods. In days gone by advertisers may have taken out advertising space in industry journals, radio adverts or if the budget allowed - tv adverts. These methods revolved around the service provider actively going out to track down channels and target their user base in order to attract custom. Not only do you have to make sure that your message reaches the intended audience, but it has to reach it withing the desired timespace. These days the tables have turned in that people will use the internet to actively search for companies who will provide the services they require.

An additional benefit of having your own website is that it can greatly reduce your outgoing spend on communication. Not only will a good website persuasively sell your products and services, but it will also be able to inform people of things like opening hours, shop locations as well as any special offers that you may be running. Your website is one of the simplest and most powerful ways of providing timely information to customers, suppliers and staff.

Creating a website is by no means a straightforward task, and one that requires a significant amount of time and technical skill. Even if you have the knowledge to put together the simplest of websites, you still may not have the time available to you. If this is the case then you may wish to hire the services of a professional web designer or perhaps a digital marketing agency if your site is likely to be more substantial.

Best Blogging Software for Your Blog

Posted by wptheme on July 16th, 2010

When it comes to choosing the best blogging software, there is so much choice available that it’s difficult to know where to start. Before you can pick the best option for you, you’ll need to decide whether you want to use a free blogging platform or not. Check below to find out more.

Free blogging software - not hosted by you

A lot of people start their blogging career this way. There’s no cost of the hosting and there’s not cost for the domain name as you’ll be piggybacking on one of the big blog hosts. Which means you won’t have any choice over your domain name. Instead it will be something like YourBlogName.blogspot.com or Squidoo.com/your-title, which isn’t as snappy as having your own domain name but in the end it’s your choice.

The biggest advantages of using free blogging sottware are:

* Cost - by defintion, it’s free. You may even be given a revenue share on the adverts that appear on your blog or be able to control them completely.

* Quick to set up - there’s no hosting to organize, no software to upload, it’s pretty much sign up and start blogging.

* No technical skills needed - the text editors are usually like a cut down version of Word, so if you can type in to a box on a compuer screen, you’re able to start blogging. To keep support down to the bare minimum, everything is intuitive and easy to use.

* Regularly spidered domains, which increases your chance of getting indexed quickly in the search engines.

The biggest disadvantages of using free blogging software are:

* You’re not in control. If your free host decides you’ve done something that breaks their rules or takes exception to your blog they can suspend you in the blink of an eye. This is serious if you’re aiming to earn money from your blog,

* You don’t own the domain name. You’re just hitching a ride and if the owner asks you to leave, that’s what you have to do.

* Less flexibility. If something isn’t provided by the domain owner, that’s usually it. Sometimes you can pay extra for certain features - the free Wordpress hosted blog service offers things like nicer themes as optional extras.

Free blogging software - hosted by you

Without a doubt, the most popular blogging software is Wordpress, which is free. You can host your blog on their domain as in the options above or you can get a lot more control by using your own hosting.

For this, you’ll need a web host and a domain name. Buy these from two separate places as that gives you more control and flexibility.

Then, with most hosts, it’s just a matter of clicking a couple of buttons to install Wordpress. Future upgrades are taken care of from the blog control panel.

Posted by wptheme on July 16th, 2010

Perhaps, as a business you are asking, should we donate money to charity?

Or maybe you are looking for new ways to donate money to charity, a way that can also be beneficial to your business? How much do you know about online charity auctions?

What if donating to charity wasn’t just a one way process?

How does it work?

From tea at The Ritz or meeting your favourite actor, to a catwalk- side seat at London Fashion week; from amazing luxurious holiday packages to memberships for gyms and clubs. There’s a sensational selection of treats and unique experiences up for grabs at most online charity auctions, all donated by different businesses trying to raise brand awareness, with the added bonus of making a charitable contribution.

Most online charity auction sites will display a company logo, an image, a short description and provide a link to the donor’s website. This exposure not only receives the obvious brand benefits but also unlocks potential Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) benefits too, that is so highly sought after in this era.

Recent research showed that 83% percent of consumers would prefer to buy products that were associated with a charitable cause. Therefore, enabling businesses, brands and marketers who align themselves with these online charity auctions to reap the rewards.

Being a corporate donor to charity is not just being a good corporate citizen - there are good business reasons for doing so too. These auctions provide a turnkey marketing program that can provide marketers with measurable advertising value, leads and paying customers. The company can reach consumers when they are at the point of making a purchasing decision in their sector. Often bidders are affluent and influential, an area of the market that is hard to reach.

Businesses need not worry about their items being undersold or poorly displayed; they can always enter a reserve price that reflects the fair value of the donation and pages can contain media rich content such as video’s and images. Post auction statistics and reports are usefully provided to donors as well as auction hosts providing details per item such as; no. of views, bounce rate, time on page and all bidding details. These bidding and bidder details provide the donor business with prime leads when good quality leads are difficult and expensive to come by.
